Conspiracy Theory?

I'm re-reading The Da Vinci Code before the movie comes out May 19th. I really enjoyed it the first time around, and thus far, it's proving equally enjoyable.

But I'm a little stumped... Have I stumbled upon something, or am I reading too much into it? You be the judge...

Like most other novels, on the top of every left page is the author's name (Dan Brown) and on the top of every right page is the title of the book (The Da Vinci Code).

Well, here is where I get stumped. On the top of page 60, a left page, are the words "Ankh Fendile." Hummm... That's not the author's name... When I first noticed it, I did a double take, furrowed my brow, then laughed - surely I caught the publishers in a mistake, printing the name of a different author in the wrong book. Silly publishers!

But I saw something else later that made me second guess my publisher's mistake theory...

On page 95, a right page, it reads "The De Lancs Code."
And on page 138, "Das Brilli."
And on page 141, "The La Sufrete Code."
And on page 192, "Reon Tigaldo."
And on page 217, "The De Ysosy Code."
And on page 262, "Mer Reve."

I know it's not just my book, or the batch shipped to Sam's Club, where we bought it, because I have a friend at work who bought her book at Costco and hers has the same things on the same pages.

And all those words can't mean "Dan Brown" and "The Da Vinci Code" in other languages because those are names and names translate literally.

Mistakes? I don't think so.

Codes? Maybe...

Paranoid? Probably.

Oh, you are having so much fun. I read the book a couple years ago and I noticed that too.

Nani, I read the hard cover a few years ago as well, but I didn't notice it then... Is it really there?

I didn't delve into it like some people have. There is an entire culture out there that have worked on this. I think they are clues to other people or societies regarding the "theory". I found it interesting and fun. I don't believe or disbelieve any of it. It is after all a fiction written from some interesting facts. I have the day off (May 19th) to visit my dad on his birthday and to go watch the movie with Uncle Skip. I'm looking forward to it. Smiles and hugs.

Codes.....That's what seems to be going on here. Is it a code or codes that the avid reader who is more into it than most can understand? Is is just a gimmick?

Probably is some kind of code. Funny thing is though, both Jess and I read it a few years ago in the hardcover and don't remember seeing that. Would love to get that copy and see...

I'm with you Nani. There are some people who take the book too seriously, like it was published as a slap in the face to religion. There's a few people at work who are reading it as part of a church discussion of the fallacies included inside. WHATEVER! It's a NOVEL. Granted, it says the story is based on fact, but really, I'm not sure it was meant to be the guide to a religious revolution.

It was so weird. I stopped reading suddenly one night. The next day my boyfriend and I were talking about the book. I opened it up and the first thing he says is, "what's up with the title?" I looked and immediately was stumped. I really don't know what's going on.

Correction, KnightlyFun. It says "mer" not "mere" which means "sea" in French. "Reve" means "dream," so literally it means "Sea dream."

--> mer reve is an anagram for Vermeer--full name Jan van der Meer van Delft 1632--75, Dutch genre painter <--
