Top Five Tuesday #8

It was just recently announced that one of my favorote acts, Marilyn Manson would be coming to town in August. I am jazzed because I have only seen him in concert once. Unfortunately, he is only co-headlining with 80s band Slayer, but you get what you can. This inspired me to do my top five favorite rock bands. Notice I did not say the top 5 rock bands of all time. That would include lists like Zeppelin, a band I LOVE. But they don't quite get on my top five favorite bands.

#5 - Kid Rock - He's just a badass. That is all I am going to say...

#4 - System of a Down - When I first heard a song from this band, I thought it was the weirdest thing I had ever heard, and that it just kicked my ass. I was instantly hooked. These guys do the whole, rock with a political message thing and they have a great time doing it. The changes in tempo, from really fast,to super slow, to everything in between is what turns me on to this band.

#3 - Marilyn Manson - Yeah, love him or hate him, and most people hate him, this guy is intense. Sure, a lot of his stuff is just for shock value. I just love his style. You have to check out this video I posted. This is for a video called Man That You Fear. Even mute it if you have to even though it is a soft song. The video is based on a short story by Shirley Jackson written in 1948 called, "The Lottery." It was written in the New Yorker and created all kinds of controversy. Watch the video and then follow the link to the short story if you are interested. It's actually pretty good and a quick 10 minute read.

The Lottery

#2 - Metallica - When everyone else in the 80s was into glam rock, these guys just rocked. Hell, we even danced to Metallica as our wedding song.

#1 - Guns N Roses. Without a doubt. I still curse Axl's name everytime I hear a GnR song for allowing this band to essentially break up at its peak. I curse his name for cancelling 2 shows on me. I curse his name for never releasing Chinese Democracy. But I still love him. And Slash. And Duff. And Matt. And Gilby. And Izzy.

So let me know what you think. Did you watch a video? Did you read the story? Who do you like in the history of rock?

I like Marilyn Manson's version of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" originally sung by The Eurythmics.

I grew up staying away from rock music. Soul and disco and of course a plethora of Latin music.
It isn't until now that I listen to "some" rock. Some sounds were junt not made for me. And you are right, once I saw Marilyn Manson on TV and it has been imposible to go past his look. He scares the crap out of me. Takes me back to when I was 13 and saw The Exorcist and I vowed to be good.

I have always liked Kid Rock & Marilyn Manson... loved their videos. (Call me crazy but I think there's something sexy about them!)

"The Lottery" was interesting... I remember seeing a TV movie based on that!

I loved, and still love Metallica. The album they did with the (Seattle?) orchestra is one of my all time favorites.

5. I am not a Kid Rock guy

4. System--I met them and went bowling with them. i had a friend who worked for Sony and his job was to entertain the talent when they came to town. he would invite a few friends along, of course. They are great guys by the way, very witty, very edgy, almost cranky at times.

3. Manson is OK--he scares people and brings the metal to the forefront.

2. Metallica is one of the originals for me. I bought Kill Em All back in 84 and still have the vinyl today. I have seen them 10 times, including up close at a dump called the variety Theater that maybe held 300 people back in the day.

1. GNR This band was headed to mega-super-mega rock and roll immortality. If they could have held it together for a while longer, they would have gone down as the greatest of all time. Ego killed that idea.

I like the first two, GNR and Metallica... I'm not really familiar with System of Down or Marilyn Manson (love his taste in women though, married to Dita von Tease!!!!)... Kid Rock, I don't like him...

I like all music but classic rock is the best. You know me, I'm not a big Marilyn fan and I still shutter when I think I bought you the CD for Christmas (wrapped in a brown paper bag because it didn't warrant good wrapping paper). What was I thinking? Anyway, I grew up with Zeppelin and Black Sabbath but I LOVED Guns and Roses and Metallica. All good bands that you guys have listed. I like them all. Even Marilyn has a few songs I like. Good post!

Tara - Yeah, that is a good one. But not as good as his version of Tainted Love.

POM - Tool is pretty good, but not in my top 10, Crue almost made my top 5, Queen is in my top 10, Korn is good, but they always sound the same. And of course, Metallica rocks.

Cass - You are too funny

Jose - Yeah, I guess he scares some

Sharon - Yeah, people do find them sexy. I saw that tv movie once with Dan Cortese and Keri Russell. It was cheesy, but pretty much the same story.

BR - That was with the San Fran Symphony and Jessica and I actually got to go to that show. It sold out(it was 2 shows actually) in 5 minutes so we were lucky. Amazing show!

Evil - I am so jealous about System. I think I have seen Metallica 4 times, but one time was with the symphony so that is worth a couple. Completely agree with you on GnR.

Seb - You should famialrize yourself ith System and Marilyn. Good stuff. He is actually divorced from Dita now.

Mom - I will never forget that wrapping paper.

Seb - Hey, maybe you have a shot now!

Of course I agree with the vast majority of your picks (one of the countless reasons we're married), although I'd arrange mine in a slightly different order. I guess I choose my favorite bands by asking myself if I'll ever get tired of listening to their albums.

5 - Disturbed - Good, loud, intense music, also with a message a lot of the time. Plus the lead singer is DREAMY! I just wish they'd stop messing up the dates when they come to town - we've had tickets to see them 3 times but never have...

4 - System Of A Down - I love their anger, their angst, their idealism and that they can roll it all up into a smart, witty, intelligent song that rocks. Like you, Manuel, I LOVE the tempo changes. I really admire how they can keep you on your toes when you listen. Plus they put on a really fun concert.

3 - Metallica - Classic rock band. Granted, I like older Metallica a bit better than newer Metallica, and Jason Newstead Metallica better than what's-his-name Trujillo Metallica. But classic nonetheless, as evidenced by them being around 20 years and still going strong and keeping their large fanbase. Plus they put on a KICK ASS concert! All 5(?) times we've seen them have been AWESOME!

2 - Marilyn Manson - When the Columbine school shooting happened and Marilyn Manson was blamed, he wrote a letter to the editor of Rolling Stone magazine that was so intelligent and eloquent and well worded that I gained tremendous respect for him. Manuel and I sometimes joke that he's the kind of person who could make fun of you and you wouldn't even know it - he's THAT smart. He is very creative, as evidenced by his lyrics and his videos and the fact that, in the beginning at least, all band member's names were a mix of a super model and a serial killer. The one time we saw him in concert, even if we were the most out of place people in the arena, we really enjoyed ourselves. His set and his costumes and his antics are very elaborate and over the top. A feast for the eyes and the ears.

1 - Nirvana - An absoluletly revolutionary band. To kick start an entire genre of music is a true accomplishment. Kurt Cobain was brilliant and so very talented and full of potential. It was a true loss to the music industry when he was killed by his wife. Oh wait, that's not what this post is about...

I have a running conversation going with a guy at work. It's an old argument about which bands should be "On the Plane". the idea is, if you knew a plane was going to crash, which loser rock bands would you stuff onto it? I think John Tesh would be the pilot...

When I heard the track Ride the Lightning for the first time when it was released I was hooked.

In fact I just wrote a post contemplating putting the first videos/tracks each week that got me into my favorite bands. I started with Twisted Sister but could not find I Am I'm Me anywhere. I'm an old fart as you can gather.

Wow...some bad ass music...I thought you were a lover!
